WASHINGTON — Airline passengers returning from Japan are being screened for radiation.

so far, the tests have shown no increased levels of that chemical.

The checks are conducted at all American airports with direct flights from Tokyo, including DFW.

American Airlines has two flights per day from Tokyo to DFW.

Airline officials point out, Tokyo is far from the danger zone, but before the passengers could reunite with family members, they found themselves getting checked for radiation.

Passenger Matt Blakeman said, ""As we came off of the flight, they had a little wand or something and they did us individually just as we walked by."

NBC News correspondent Lester Holt was checked for radiation.

He was okay, but his shoes showed slightly elevated radiation levels.

However, the levels were so low that it could be cleaned off with simple soap and water.
