Many domestic flights at New York area airports were canceled Tuesday because of the approaching snowstorm. it is a blow for travelers, especially those who also had to deal with grounded flights during the recent Christmas blizzard.

That’s what happened to Brooklyn resident Kelsey Smith, who is stranded in Los Angeles and not sure if her flight to New York will leave as scheduled Tuesday afternoon.Smith was on one of the last flights out of JFK the day after Christmas.

“I thought I miraculously made it out of the city during the blizzard. I wasn’t expecting to have anymore problems on my way back and you know I’d been checking the weather reports, it looked like everything was going to be fine,” said Smith.Smith says all the disruptions have put a damper on her wanderlust for awhile.“Traveling these days is just really annoying. I’m definitely ready to stay put in New York for a little while,” Smith said. Many carriers are waiving fees for passengers who prefer to change their reservations instead of holding their breath to see if their flight is canceled or not.Ron Marsico, a spokesman with the Port Authority, said they are ready to face the coming storm. Port Authority has more than 200 pieces of heavy snow equipment at the airports, including plows that can clear snow at 40 miles per hour and melters that can liquefy up to 500 tons of snow per hour.
