the Transportation Department announced Wednesday that it plans to approve antitrust immunity for two U.S.-Japan airline alliances.the proposed decision would grant immunity to American Airlines and Japan Airlines, already partners in the Oneworld alliance. It would also approve immunity for United Airlines, Continental Airlines and All Nippon Airways, which are members of the Star alliance. With antitrust immunity, carriers may cooperate to schedule, market and operate trans-Pacific flights, as well as share expenses and revenue on those routes.the agency said it found that granting antitrust immunity would provide “a variety of benefits, including lower fares on more routes, increased services, better schedules, and reduced travel and connection times.”Fort Worth-based American, which launched its trans-Atlantic joint venture with British Airways and Iberia on Wednesday, said customers will benefit from its agreement with Japan Airlines.”An immunized joint business will benefit the U.S. and Japanese economies, promote increased cultural exchange and provide more travel choices and greater access to discounted fares for millions of consumers,” said Will Ris, American senior vice president.American will begin daily flights between new York’s JFK Airport and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Jan. 20. Japan Airlines will start daily flights between Haneda and San Francisco and Honolulu on Oct. 31.
