BALTIMORE — Holiday travelers can expect more of their budget to go to travel costs this year.According to some researchers, the cost of air fare has increased significantly for the holidays. Travelers shopping around for Thanksgiving or Christmas travel may find ticket prices as much as 60 percent higher than they were this time last year.Experts said one reason ticket prices are soaring is actually good news for the economy.Researchers said people who stayed home last season are starting to fly again.”They’re purchasing tickets further out. Obviously, with that you have less capacity. People are purchasing seats, and there’s just not as much available,” Safe Harbors Travel President Jay Ellenby said.Ellenby’s company manages business travel for several local corporations. His numbers show that ticket prices for the fourth quarter are actually lower than they were the same time last year.”They have decreased their fares, in our opinion, but what they’re doing is they’re charging other fees — such as for seats, such as for bags, such as for food,” Ellenby said.Another study done by popular travel website Farecompare.com shows that fares are way up.the website compared airfares for 50 popular routes — from late November through early January this year — to prices during the same period last year. on average, it found prices to be up about 17 percent. For Thanksgiving, for example, researchers found a flight from Philadelphia to Orlando will cost travelers about 60 percent more.regardless of how the numbers add up, Ellenby offered some advice to travelers still looking to buy for the holidays.”Show some flexibility,” Ellenby said. “Give or take a couple days in between travel on Christmas Day. Not as many people travel on Christmas Day or travel a couple of days prior to that. You will get a lower fare.”He said people should always check in at the discount airlines, as well.
