MALAYSIA Airlines Cargo Sdn Bhd (MASkargo), the cargo unit of Malaysia Airlines, grew air freight revenue by 60 per cent, for the first half of the year, compared with last year, thanks to a general recovery in the air freight business. the bulk of the recovery in the air freight business came from emerging economies; India and China. Kuala Lumpur International Airport also benefited from the recovery, seeing an increase in total throughput of 30 per cent for the first half of the year, compared with the previous year. the higher traffic revenue was supported by increased yields, as MASkargo managed to bring it up by 12 per cent for the first half of the year. “Yields have been brought up to levels seen before the crisis. Its the best we have seen over the last two years,” MASkargo managing director Shahari Sulaiman told Business Times recently. according to the International Air Transport Association, yields were down by about 17 per cent last year. “The environment looks quite stable for the year – at least until the end of the year. Most people are cautious about next year however, because the economic recovery has been volatile, and we are not sure of the long term impact of it and how it will affect businesses,” Shahari said. Overall capacity for the cargo business grew by 15 per cent for the first half of the year, while cargo uplift grew at a much higher rate of 23 per cent. Its freighter operations make up about 50 per cent of total capacity now, up from just 35 per cent during the crisis in 2009. Load factor was also above 75 per cent for the first half, a 16.5 per cent increase from last year. MASkargo’s operations in China and Hong Kong, remains the single largest contributor to revenue, making up about 30 per cent of revenue. Contribution from both passenger flights and freighters to revenue, are also split evenly.
