Marsha Smith and Natalie BrownKern Valley SunKern County Director of Airports Jack Gotcher welcomed a crowd of more than 60 people gathered at the Kern Valley Airport campground to honor the late Gene Nelson last Friday.“In my career in the Air Force, it was always important to reach out and touch young people and bring them into aviation, whether they made that a career or they just learned to fly, maybe only took one flight, it would change them fundamentally,” said Gotcher. “Gene spent much of his life doing that, and there are still people out there he taught and are still thinking of what he brought to their lives.” Kim Mullins, field representative from Supervisor Jon McQuiston’s office presented Nelson’s wife, Jeltje Nelson, with a Resolution on behalf of the California State Assembly, Assembly Woman Jean Fuller; California State Senate, Senator Roy Ashburn; and Kern County Supervisor Jon McQuiston.“People will never know how many lives that he touched, that he has saved, but we all see it every day when somebody takes off or lands here safely,” Mullins said.Nelson and his wife Jeltje, along with friends Mike and Lynell Smith, were awarded the Kern Valley Airport contract in 1980 when the former contractors retired. Shortly after, the Nelsons bought the Smiths’ portion of the contract, and Nelson Aviation was created.Nelson Aviation is under contract to manage the airport, the Airport Café, fuel (no longer available due to skyrocketing prices), tie-downs and hangers. The Nelsons also operated their personal business, Custom Thread Grinding, on the property. their son, Dennis Nelson, now owns and operates that business. The Nelsons developed the campground, located near the end of the taxi-way, in the early years of their contract. It’s become a popular spot for fly-in’s including the Mt SAC College flying team that stays for a week of camaraderie and contests.Over the years, many of the trees near the runway have grown to a height that obstructed the flight pattern and were cut down. In Nelson’s honor a Sycamore tree was donated by Tip top Tree Service and planted by the family during Friday morning’s program.A large rock adorned with a plaque dedicated to Nelson will be installed by the tree, appropriately facing the beautiful sunrise that Nelson loved so much.Closing the presentation, Gotcher said, “The Department of Airports considers the Kern Valley Airport as the jewel and crown of our system.” Gene Nelson’s hard work and dedication to bring his vision to life, the airport as it is today, is a legacy the Nelson family can certainly be proud of.”Jeltje Nelson commented that she and her family and so many people miss Gene. “I want to thank everyone for coming out on this beautiful day. We really appreciate you for being here to share this with us,” she said.Nelson was also honored the previous Tuesday at the Board of Supervisors meeting, where McQuiston presented Jeltje Nelson, son Dennis Nelson and wife Kim, and daughter, Natalie Brown, a special Resolution honoring Gene’s life and leadership, and contributions to the aviation community of Kern County.Nelson brought the experience of aviation to many young people in the valley through the Young Eagles program. The nationwide program offers children, eight to 17, the thrill of free airplane rides, as well as a scholarship program that partners with the Kern River Valley Rotary Club to aid young aviator hopefuls in obtaining flying lessons in pursuit of their dreams.
