Travel Q&A: Airline bereavement fares

Bereavement airfares
Q: Do the airlines still offer bereavement fares?
A: some do, but they’re not especially cheap, and the discounts vary depending on airline.
You’re better off buying a last-minute fare from a site such as lastminute.com or bidding at Priceline.com.
If using Priceline, search first on a site such as Expedia or Travelocity for the lowest possible fare you can find for your dates of travel, and then try bidding on Priceline using the “name your own price” feature at about 40 percent of the fare you found elsewhere.
You won’t know the exact flight times or airline until after you pay, but you will be able to choose the day of travel. If you’re attending a funeral, it’s best to plan to arrive the day before, in case your flight is canceled or delayed.
